FJP Community Network Grant Winner: Southern California Public Radio / KPCC

January 28, 2020

The Funded Project:

Build on existing community-engaged journalism across the KPCC newsroom with in-person events and direct interactions to inform the content for a Human Voter Guide.

Grant Amount:

$25,000

In Their Own Words:

SCPR requests funding for our Human Voter Guide as part of our Voter Game Plan for the primary elections in 2020. The Los Angeles region is known for having some of the lowest voter turnouts in the state. While the last midterm elections saw an uptick in turnout, it was still below 25% of the county’s 6 million-plus eligible voters. Our Human Voter Guide leverages engaged journalism across our online, on-air, and in-person platforms and resources like Hearken and GroundSource to combat voter confusion. Huge transformations are coming to the voting process in Los Angeles: A shift to regional voting centers and new electronic voting machines make our work more necessary than ever before.
Ideally, our work will help people understand the mechanics of voting and encourage more of them to make informed decisions in the voting booth. Additionally, we are building a project that equips citizens to become civically engaged and ultimately builds trust in journalism and specifically our newsroom. We will build on our community-engaged journalism across the newsroom with in-person events, radio segments, narrative articles, and direct interaction via GroundSource and Hearken. Preferably, this approach will create a system that can turn engaged audiences into sustaining members by moving people down the fundraising funnel, thus diversifying and growing how we earn audience revenue.
