FJP Community Network Grant Winner: Palo Alto Online

January 28, 2020

The Funded Project:

Engage with Palo Alto’s Chinese-American residents to better understand how they find and consume information, to then better serve their information needs on our platforms.

Grant Amount:

$23,650

In Their Own Words:

Our project aims to increase engagement with recent Chinese immigrants in our community, increase their readership of our newspaper, website and email newsletters and determine how their information needs can be better met through improvements of our existing products and the development of new ones.
Our community has seen a large increase in residents of Chinese descent over the last 20 years. Today, about one-third of the population of Palo Alto and a slight majority of the children enrolled in the local school district are Chinese-Americans. For what was historically a largely white community, this change has focused attention on cultural differences and brought latent racism out of the shadows.
A divide exists between recent Chinese immigrants and those whose parents or grandparents emigrated from China decades ago. The more recent immigrants are generally wealthy and have moved to the United States for professional opportunities, to protect financial assets and/or to enroll their children in high performing college prep focused school districts. Their values have clashed with those of longtime residents.
Our project will consist of holding meetings with Chinese-Americans in our community and better understanding how they inform themselves on local issues. For both language and cultural reasons, readership of our products by the more recent immigrant community is low, as is their civic engagement.
