FJP Community Network Grant Winner: The Arizona Daily Star

January 28, 2020

The Funded Project:

Through events and online resources, strengthen Tucson’s military and Latinx communities by connecting them to each other and to local education options.

Grant Amount:

$25,000

In Their Own Words:

The Arizona Daily Star will build community around the information needs of parents by connecting two underserved communities — military families and Latinx families with first-generation college-goers — to helpful and comprehensive digital guides about local education options.
We will build on our existing School Guide and Summer Camp Guide to create digital School Guides in English and Spanish. Parents can search and filter school information to find the options for their kids. This product is particularly important to local military families, who arrive at the base on short notice and must find resources. Our community partner is the School Liaison for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
We’ll also create a new digital Latinx College Guide, in English and Spanish, to serve the unique needs of our local Latinx community and help address the gap in the educational attainment rate. Our community partners are the Metropolitan Education Commission and the Regional College Access Center, with additional support from the Education Writers Association.
The guides will become evergreen community resources, discovered through our social media channels — Facebook and Whatsapp, shared among parents, and by our community partners.
Both products have event components. Our School and Camp Fair draws 1,000 local parents. We’ll build on that success by offering a Latinx College Fair event with our community partner, the parent-led College Application Resources group, which has never produced one of their college events in Spanish.
Selling “premium listings” and sponsorships will help these products become profitable for our local news organization.
