Facebook and INMA Launch Audience Analytics Accelerator in Latin America

February 17, 2021

The Facebook Journalism Project and the International News Media Association (INMA) launched today the Audience Analytics Accelerator in Latin America, offering eligible news organizations from across the region an eight-month training program and $250,000 USD in grants to help transform their online businesses through data insights and analysis.
Applications can be submitted directly through the INMA portal until March 10, 2021. For more details about this program, created in collaboration with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), review the terms for full eligibility criteria, evaluation process and restrictions here.
The Accelerator builds on Facebook’s initiatives to support the news industry across Latin America. The program, developed and led by INMA’s researcher-in-residence Greg Piechota, will include intensive virtual training sessions to share case studies from the INMA global network, hands-on coaching by a world-renowned faculty of news industry experts, and the opportunity for publishers to exchange ideas as peers.
Up to 15 news organizations will be selected to join the program and receive grants of at least $15,000 USD each. Funding will support the development of projects such as refining subscription funnels, increasing and maintaining revenue via data analysis, or optimizing resources based on productivity reports. The program will accept applications from media companies with a significant digital presence, at least three years in the market, from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.
“With the Facebook Journalism Project, we are focused on creating and bringing initiatives to Latin America to support news organizations promote digital transformation, innovate and build long-term, sustainable business models,” said Claudia Gurfinkel, Director of News Partnerships for Facebook in Latin America. “This new partnership with INMA and the ICFJ will give publishers valuable tools to develop effective audience strategies.
Earl J. Wilkinson, Executive Director and CEO of INMA, stated: “Latin American publishers are rapidly evolving their business model to embrace subscriptions at scale, and they urgently need to develop their audience analytics capabilities. The Audience Analytics Accelerator will elevate data capabilities. It will create an on-ramp to understand where data sits and how editors and business executives can practically apply insights to grow audience and revenue.”
“This initiative comes at just the right time,” said Johanna Carrillo, vice president of programs for ICFJ, which has a long history of supporting independent journalism in the region. “It will strengthen newsrooms financially, so that they can keep providing reliable, even life-saving information during the COVID-19 era.”
Last year Facebook launched a $2 million USD fund to support news organizations in the region during the COVID-19 crisis. The Facebook Journalism Project has partnered with organizations to give trainings on best practices to publishers and journalists across the region. And over the past years, it has offered other Accelerator programs in Latin America focused on local news, digital video and reader revenue.
