Passion breeds ideas, innovation, and impact. This is the foundation of Facebook's product engineering team. Facebook consists of a large family of products and features built by people with a passion to help us achieve our mission of making the world more open and connected. From Facebook Pages that help people, brands, businesses, public figures and many others to engage with people, to Games, K-12 Personalized Learning Plan, Amber Alert, and Safety Check, Facebook products enable people to connect and share the things that matter the most. Engineers who work on these products are responsible for building them from concept to launch, and iterating beyond. Depending on the product, this requires strong knowledge of a mix of disciplines including computer science, data analysis, and user experience.

Small Teams, Big Impact

Building products that help and empower over a billion people around the world is at the core of what Facebook product engineers do. How does it all happen? Product engineers work in small teams that collaborate closely with cross functions such as design, product management, data analysis and science, research, and content strategy. Establishing product goals together across all functions is an important part of the process, and product engineers work cyclically with their teams to ensure that they're all working towards the same goal together.

Meet the Team

Meet a few of our product engineers who are constantly striving to build and improve Facebook's family of products

Renata A, Engineering Manager, Groups

Renata and her team are connecting people through meaningful communities on Facebook through Facebook Groups. Currently, her team is developing features that make Groups meaningful and useful. These features include admin membership criteria that allow admins to approve or decline memberships requests more effectively, and Groups Discover, which shows users the Facebook Groups they might be interested in joining through a recommendation engine.
“The scale of how many people are using the product is simply amazing,” says Renata. “Everyone wants to belong to a community. It's a basic human need. We are building a product that enables that, and it's extremely rewarding.”

Justin C, Software Engineer, News Feed

Justin and his team are building features to connect people with their friends, family, and interests through Facebook's News Feed. Over the past year, he has been focused on two important aspects: making it easy for people to have conversations with their friends about stories, and finding new ways to connect people with stories about specific interests.
He is currently building a News Feed product team in Seattle. Together, they closely collaborate with product designers, product managers, product specialists, user experience researchers, and ranking engineers.
"It’s exciting to help people all around the world connect through meaningful conversations in News Feed.” says Justin. “I know I'm making an impact when what I work on can reach the hands of 1.8 billion people.”

Caroline S, Software Engineer, Ads

Caroline's day typically involves meetings, writing code, and collaborating with her team to make product decisions or unblock issues to ship their products. She's responsible for building the tools that people use to run ads on Facebook. Her team is constantly looking for ways to make it easier for advertisers to generate results for their business. She describes her diverse team as a “tiny startup” within Facebook — comprised of engineers, designers, researchers, data analysts, and more — that will do what it takes to make their product outstanding, whether it means leaning on an area of expertise or stepping up to learn a completely new skill.
Amidst the hard work and close collaboration, Caroline makes time to grab coffee with friends and enjoy the Facebook campus.
“Working at Facebook has provided me with amazing opportunities to ship really meaningful products,” says Caroline. “All alongside an unbeatable group of super smart, diverse, and supportive people that make me excited to come in every day, even after 4.5 years!”

Breno R, Engineering Director, Internet.org

Based in Menlo Park and Tel Aviv, Breno and his team are working to bring Internet access and connectivity to the two-thirds of the world that currently don't enjoy this benefit. Current projects include:
  • Free Basics - a product that provides people with access to services on their mobile phones in markets where Internet access may be less affordable. People get access to content such as news, employment, health, education, and local information.
  • Express Wifi - a service that empowers local entrepreneurs to provide fast and affordable Internet access to their towns and villages.
“As part of our commitment to connecting the world, we have a variety of programs under Internet.org. Through these efforts we have connected millions of people, based on our best estimates,” says Breno. “This is just the beginning. We have a huge opportunity to make even more impact. I believe that our culture, employees, and constantly evolving technology help us focus on our goal of making the world more open and connected.”
While working on challenging and impactful projects is something that motivates Facebook's product engineers, there is no doubt that making a difference in people's lives is among the top reasons why they love what they do.
