Daniel - Media Profile, Client Solutions Manager

My journey to Facebook

During my degree I used to work for a government company that was very big and bureaucratic. After I graduated from university all I wanted is to work for a young company that I can be major part of. I joined an agency which specialized in managing marketing budgets for major gaming companies, during my 3 years there I got the chance to work with clients, run huge campaigns on Facebook and manage a team of my own. When I got to the point where I wanted to grab the next challenge in my career, Facebook was my immediate target of course. My experience in managing clients and my business understanding of the eco system helped me a lot to get accepted.

Day in the life of Daniel

My main role at Facebook is to help my clients grow their business efficiently. Given this goal, I have a lot of variety in my day and I don’t really have a routine. I can start my day by speaking with a CMO of a company I manage about the contribution of Facebook to their overall marketing strategy, proceed with thinking of new markets to penetrate with the head of growth, conduct a creative session with the studio and finish the day with brainstorming with colleagues from New York about multi brand strategies. Another major part of my work is to help small start ups expand globally and understand consumers worldwide, that demands a lot of creativity and innovative thinking so the diversity in my day to day is crucial for success.
The best thing in Facebook is that it feels like working in a startup. You move fast, and you play to your strengths. Your skills are what make you unique and the focus is always on excelling at what you do best.

Describe your favorite campaign and it's impact

My favorite impact is to help companies grow and expand. When I joined Facebook I was introduced to a company of 4 people that only created their Facebook account a month before our introduction. I've had the opportunity to help them scale to a 100+ employee company that is operating worldwide and is the biggest company in their category in the US. I get to see jobs been created, factories built and business evolve during my day to day and there is nothing more satisfying than that.

At Facebook there are two career tracks, an Individual Contributor and a Manager - share a little about these

As I’ve mentioned, working here truly feels like working for a startup. One of the implications is that we’re trying to stay as flat as we can and give every individual the strength to operate freely - we encourage people to excel at their role and give the option to be promoted regularly regardless if they changed their position. That's where the IC (individual contributor) level kicks in, you can go up the levels at Facebook without having to manage a team. Given the fact that not everyone likes managing people, it provides you with the freedom to focus on your strengths.
Ido Inchal - Client Solutions Manager

Life before Facebook

Prior to Facebook, I acquired a BA in Cognitive Sciences and Business Management, while working as a Growth Marketer and BI Manager at an online marketing agency and various startups. My passion is for data analysis, extracting insights to see them come alive and really impact a company/startup. Working in Facebook's Global Marketing Solutions team , supporting various advertisers, allows me to scale that impact over multiple companies in different stages of growth.

What made you decide on Facebook?

In all honesty, prior to joining Facebook I was very cautious about leaving the startup scene. I assumed that joining a “big American corporate” would stifle personal growth, limit my creative freedom and ability to determine my own priorities and goals. What made me re-think working at Facebook were the people I got to meet during my interview process, and personal conversations I had with current employees that I had some personal or professional acquaintance with. At some point I asked myself, how could it be that all of these talented people feel satisfied and challenged in their work, so I understood that I was perhaps a little prejudiced and drawing a wrong conclusion. It was this insight that fueled my motivation to really dive into the process and give my best effort (and a bit more). On getting the job, I've found that some of my perceptions were completely off base. The autonomy I have to work on projects I'm passionate about and play to my strengths is something I couldn't easily do in the past, while here it's the expectation and what I'm being measured for.
So is Facebook a corporate? Yes and no. There are some elements which are corporate, but I experience most of them as positive ones like my freedom to get the resources I need, enjoying perks and learning opportunities that are unique to Facebook. And on the flip side, not being limited (to an extent) in picking areas of focus, really prioritize and only work on projects that move a needle somewhere inside or outside of Facebook.

Favorite things about Facebook

One of my favorite things about working at Facebook is the company's culture which promotes open feedback and conversation. Having that as the common ground to a group of highly motivated and talented people, creates a working environment that always pushes me to the next step, keeps me hungry and wanting to learn more.
Another major area of satisfaction I found is the cross functional nature of my work, which requires me to collaborate with diverse global teams from Product, Engineering through Measurement, Creative and Policy makers. All have very different modes in which they operate, but being mission driven makes sure that eventually we will always strive to reach similar destinations, which makes collaboration easy and enjoyable.

Share with us your journey from Data Scientist to Client Solutions Manager

I always knew that I love dealing with numbers, after I finished my degree (statistics and economics) I worked as a data scientist in the second largest bank in Israel, built credit score models in the risk management department and I enjoyed this work. A friend of mine started working at Facebook at this time and he asked me if I was interested in joining. I was very happy with the type of work I've done so I asked him if it's an analytical role. He told me that definitely yes, and that it combines analytical work with business consulting . I applied to the role, the hiring process was different because I didn't know anything about ads and online marketing and I wasn't sure how to answer some of the questions. I got an offer and started working as a Client Solutions Manager. Since I was the first CSM with heavy data background the first months were difficult, I had to learn a whole new world (media, online marketing etc) and also understand how my data background can bring value to the team and clients. After a while I figured it out and enjoyed seeing the impact of my work, and how it helps companies to grow. I've learnt so many new things mostly on how to use the right numbers to move things, strategic thinking, executing and more.

What have your learnt about yourself along the way?

I've learnt that I love consulting and mentoring people. The culture in Facebook is very special and it feels that everyone is open and always willing to help each other and give feedback. After a while in the role I started mentoring new hires and help them close the gap faster.

Why do people with a statistics background make great Client Solutions Managers?

Because of two main reasons:
1. The industry: The industry in Israel is super data driven. You can't really “sell” anything, if you can't back it up with numbers. The discussions most of the time (even with c suite levels) includes numbers, analyses and requires numerical logic.
2. The day to-day-work - the day to-day work of CSMs is quite flexible, many times if someone has a good idea, they can just go and do it. I believe that 80% of the ideas will require special analysis.

How has Facebook supported your career journey?

As mentioned above I learnt a lot when I was a CSM. The 2.5 years in the role were one of the most meaningful time in my career and my life. It helped me open my mind to new areas, pushed me to lead things and challenged me a lot on a daily basis. I learned from amazing people at the company and feel thankful for this :)
8 months ago I moved with my family to Singapore (my husband got a job offer here) and Facebook supported me and help me find a position here at the Singapore office. Today, I'm working in the marketing science team as a measurement expert.
