Media Accreditation

Journalists, photographers and audiovisual teams who are not holders of joint EU-institutional media accreditation, need to apply for European Parliament media accreditation (and a recording permit when applicable) in order to work in the European Parliament.

There are essentially two types of accreditation available in the European Parliament:

  1. Short-term media accreditation
  2. Annual media accreditation

All journalists granted access to Parliament's buildings can use the facilities provided for journalists. Before applying, please read the media accreditation rules.

1. Short-term media accreditation

Short-term accreditation runs from one day to within a maximum of five business days.

If you are a journalist coming to Brussels, Strasbourg or Luxembourg for a specific meeting, event or plenary session, you can obtain short-term accreditation. You can apply for accreditation through the following registration website (Joureg) . You will need to register by creating your free online personal account. A verification link will be sent from noreply@europarl.europa.eu. to the email provided during registration. Once an account has been validated, you may proceed with your accreditation request by logging onto the registration website (Joureg).

Information needed to apply for short-term media accreditation:

  • Copy of a valid press card or a recent assignment letter issued by the editor-in-chief, publisher or head of office with clear evidence that you are on assignment from a specific news organisation or publication and justifying the request for accreditation. The assignment letter needs to be on official letterhead and should specify name, function of the journalist and the period for which accreditation is sought at the European Parliament. You cannot nominate yourself.
  • Identity card-size photo with the following size and format- aspect ratio 3X4, jpeg, and +/- 100 KB.
  • Official identity card, showing a type, number and expiry date
  • Purpose of the visit
  • Freelance journalists only: you will need to provide a proof of journalistic activity (a recent by-lined publication (s) and corresponding evidence of payment).

Once an accreditation request is approved, journalists can pick up credentials at the media accreditation office (see below for location and hours). You will be required to show an identification card.

2. Annual media accreditation

Annual media accreditation is valid for a calendar year (from January to December) and is renewable upon request. New applications or applications for renewal can be submitted from November for the following year until the end of October of the year in question.

If you are a journalist who reports regularly on European Parliamentary affairs and are based in or near Strasbourg, Brussels or Luxembourg, you qualify for annual accreditation. The accreditation is valid in all three seats of the European Parliament (Strasbourg, Brussels, Luxembourg).

Applications for annual media accreditation should be submitted through the registration website (Joureg).

Information needed to apply for annual media accreditation:

  • Copy of a valid press card
  • A recent assignment letter from the editor-in-chief, publisher or head of office justifying the request for accreditation. The assignment letter needs to be on official letterhead and should specify name, function of the journalist and the period for which accreditation is sought at the European Parliament. You cannot nominate yourself.
  • ID size photo with the following size and format - aspect ratio 3X4, jpeg, and +/- 100 KB.
  • Official identity card, showing a type, number and expiry date
  • Proof that the applicant’s main or second residence is in or near the three official seats of the European Parliament (Brussels, Strasbourg, Luxembourg). Evidence of residence includes for example, a copy of an identity card, proof of residential address, or an accommodation rental contract.
  • For freelance journalists only: you will need to provide a proof of journalistic activity (for example, a recent by-lined publication (s) and corresponding evidence of payment)

N.B. Special media accreditation: special accreditation may be requested for certain events such as the European elections, activities occurring during a weekend or outside standard business hours. Obtaining such accreditation may be subject to special requirements that will be announced by the European Parliament in advance.

Recording permit for media

Journalists, press photographers and camera operators, including holders of the joint EU-inter-institutional media accreditation, need to obtain a recording permit to film and take photographs in the European Parliament. The recording permit is issued at the media accreditation desk. It can also be requested beforehand by sending an email to media.accreditation@ep.europa.eu. During the registration, journalists must adhere to and sign the rules for filming and taking photographs in the European Parliament.

Non-media recording permit

Photographers and camera operators, who are invited by members of the European Parliament or by the European Parliament’s Services (hereby known as the ‘requesting authority’) for special events, communication and promotional work, need to obtain a ‘non-media’ recording permit. The requesting authority or the photographer and camera operator shall request the permit 24 hours in advance by sending an email request to media.accreditation@ep.europa.eu. Applicants must adhere to and sign the rules for non-media recording. This permit does not give the holder access to the European Parliament premises. In addition to the permit, the requesting authority must also apply for the standard visitor access. The requesting authority is responsible for ensuring that the rules for recordings by non-media representatives are complied with.
