Meduza is hiring a news editor for its English-language edition

Source: Meduza

Meduza is looking for a versatile, full-time news editor with native fluency in English and extremely strong Russian-language skills to join the publication’s expanding English-language edition.

Meduza publishes news and feature stories from hundreds of sources in Russia and across the former Soviet Union. We value our independence and strive to be a reliable, trusted outlet for objective, verified, and unbiased information about the region, as well as a source for sharp insights about one of the most important places in the world. Meduza’s team includes some of Russia’s top professionals in news and reporting.

What you’ll do as news editor

As a full-time, independent contractor, you will complete, edit, and curate daily translations of short- and medium-length stories as well as summaries of longer pieces. You will work remotely to convey fast-breaking news produced in Riga and Moscow to an English-language audience, reporting directly to the managing editor of Meduza’s English-language edition. Additional responsibilities include distributing Meduza’s work in English on social media and assisting occasionally in the production of our daily English-language newsletter.

What you’ll bring to the job

  • A bachelor’s degree and two years’ professional or academic experience translating contemporary texts from Russian into English
  • Russian area expertise (a thorough knowledge of the country’s politics, culture, and current events)
  • The ability to work remotely through a digital workspace
  • A lively writing style that doesn’t bore people to tears when they read about current events in Russia

Candidates with professional experience in journalism and social media are preferred.

To apply, submit a cover letter, résumé, and two feature stories or similar texts you have translated from Russian into English in the past two years (attachments or hyperlinks are both fine) to [email protected], subject line: “News Editor Position.” Submissions are due by Friday, February 21, 2020. The preferred start date for this job is Thursday, April 2, 2020.

About this job:

Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Includes paid holidays, vacation time, and sick leave.

This is a translation and editing position, not a reporting position.
