Grant Amount:

$22,293

In Their Own Words:

Washington, D.C. — the city with the highest rate of displacement — has a troubled history with public housing redevelopment. Projects have failed to take the perspectives and needs of residents into account, resulting in community distrust of development throughout the city. Redevelopment projects operate through a planning process that is often byzantine and opaque, despite efforts to engage local communities.
Greater Greater Washington would like to use deep reporting on the Greenleaf public housing redevelopment in Washington, D.C., to amplify the perspective and needs of existing residents. Over six months, we will help educate residents about the planning process and help them advocate for themselves and illuminate the attitudes toward development and the experiences of housing insecurity among a specific community of public housing residents.
We will produce a package of articles that will help the broader community understand the experiences and concerns of public housing residents, while empowering residents to lead the redevelopment of Greenleaf. We will provide in-depth and insightful coverage of a community that is typically left out of news about new developments and the housing crisis in the region.
This project will build community among underrepresented residents of D.C.’s public housing. We will also forge connections with organizations that serve public housing residents and expand the reach of our publication. Additionally, this reporting will bring new visibility for our publication and increase our membership by providing content that is not available from other sources, leveraging our successful membership program to bring in more individual donors.
