FJP Community Network Grant Winner: San Francisco Public Press

28 Januari 2020

The Funded Project:

Facilitate solutions-based discussions about San Francisco’s housing crisis through a live event series for city leaders and residents.

Grant Amount:

$25,000

In Their Own Words:

The Public Press produces ad-free public-interest journalism and is recognized as a trusted news source. We host gatherings on local policy issues, promoting civic engagement through face-to-face community conversations. In the past year, we held eight events and received feedback from participants: They want to attend more convenings that use nonpartisan data and analysis to facilitate conversations and generate solution ideas on meaningful topics.
We are seeking funding to host a series of larger policy-focused events building on findings from previous gatherings. Our theme — solving the housing crisis in San Francisco — will bridge three events:
1. Vulnerable tenants facing eviction
2. Obstacles to permanent affordable housing
3. Strengths and weaknesses of current and proposed homelessness policies
Attendees will hear from stakeholders, city leaders and affected groups allowing them to exchange ideas and work toward shared goals. We have done extensive reporting on these topics and will break down the issues for participants to analyze, discuss and brainstorm solutions in workshop groups.
Journalists will cover the events for web, print and audio distribution through “Civic,” our local public affairs podcast and radio program airing on KSFP 102.5 FM, our low-power FM station. By combining our reporting on multiple media platforms with live events, we take local journalism to the next level, through direct engagement with citizens who, through these convenings, are empowered to effect real change.
