FJP Community Network Grant Winner: La Raza

La Raza will celebrate 50 years of participation in Chicago's Latinx community with a series of listening events to tackle issues and opportunities local Hispanics are facing this election year.

2020 will be a critical year in terms of civic and democratic engagement and will have enormous impacts in the country as a whole and, in the case of the Latinx community in Chicago (a community often underserved by government and other institutions) in terms of empowerment, participation and commitment to build a better future.

La Raza newspaper, the most prestigious Spanish publication in Chicago will celebrate in 2020 its 50th anniversary and wants to do it with a series of community building and forum events that will address some of the issues, challenges, opportunities and achievements that the Hispanics in Chicago are currently experiencing. The participation of the public and organizations will help to dynamize our coverage and outreach and all will serve to empower and recognize key diverse individuals and organizations that are serving the local Hispanic community. Continuing successful initiatives and doing more is our goal.

Additionally, those events will be helpful in improving our newspaper’s affordability: it will provide opportunities for companies and institutions willing to sponsor La Raza and will be the first steps towards possible innovations such as a membership program to diversify sources of revenue and new non-profit/hybrid structures for organizational transformation.
