FJP Community Network Grant Winner: Esperanza

28 janvier 2020

The Funded Project:

Prioritize the stories, needs and interests of the North Philadelphia Hispanic community through community outreach and investment in existing partnerships.

Grant Amount:

$25,000

In Their Own Words:

Esperanza, a community development organization located in the predominantly low-income, Latino neighborhood of Hunting Park, recently acquired the weekly Impacto newspaper, one of only three Spanish-language newspapers in Philadelphia. We are gradually shifting the paper to become a more community-focused vehicle for local voices, stories, education, and advocacy.
Esperanza will conduct a full overhaul of Impacto’s structure, content, and business plan, shifting from its current focus on regional and national news, to prioritize the stories, needs, and interests of the North Philadelphia Hispanic community. In addition to recruiting a broader variety of content contributors, from local Latino reporters to community members and Esperanza students, we are incubating a community outreach and organizing initiative in the neighborhood that would address issues such as gentrification and displacement, civic engagement, and education. This grant would enable us to connect Impacto with our on-the-ground community organizing presence, by developing high-quality journalistic content aligned to these issue areas.
The proposed initiative bolsters Esperanza’s larger vision for creating an Opportunity Community with a robust ecosystem of institutions, programs, and services that stabilize the Hunting Park community, protect against the risk of displacement due to gentrification, and provide quality-of-life for neighborhood residents at any income level. The ideal outcome for the grant period would be development of a new content pipeline focused on key community issues. Through this transformation, Impacto would become a valuable source of local news to a community that currently suffers from a lack of representation and access to culturally and linguistically relevant news content.
