In Their Own Words:

Enlace Latino NC is North Carolina’s first nonprofit digital news organization in Spanish. Our mission is to empower the state’s diverse community of Latinx immigrants to become more involved in the political and social changes that affect them by publishing independent, non-partisan, public service journalism about local politics, government, immigration, and community affairs. Our growing reputation has positioned us as a reliable political compass and information bridge for this community and the nonprofit and grassroots organizations that serve them.
Our coverage responds to a very palpable need for access to information in Spanish, particularly information about engaging with the complex electoral process in the United States. North Carolina has not yet decided what electoral information it will be providing in Spanish to its population in the forthcoming election period. Our hope is to mitigate the effects of this informational void that has historically thwarted the Latinx immigrant community’s civic participation.
Our proposal is to pilot a curated digital election calendar in Spanish that communicates key dates and events to the community, leading up to the 2020 Election Day. In parallel, we will host two inquiry-driven Town Halls to gauge the community’s informational needs. Our ideal outcome involves increasing participation rates among Latinx voters, a pragmatic appraisal of the community’s information needs, and successful use of the digital election calendar. This will positively impact Enlace Latino NC’s sustainability by helping us grow our audience and, if successful, add a highly scalable product to our repertoire.
