FJP Community Network Grant Winner: Open Campus & The Lens

28 de enero de 2020

The Funded Project:

Spark discussions about how New Orleans colleges can better serve local residents through neighborhood forums and an online guide that gives adults and nontraditional students access to information about higher education.

Grant Amount:

$22,000

In Their Own Words:

We will engage New Orleans residents about the barriers the city’s adults face in accessing high-quality higher education and to empower them to better navigate the system and get the education they need.
Open Campus and The Lens will partner to hold three neighborhood-based forums to learn about how well residents feel they and their communities are being served by their colleges. Building on what we learn, we will develop an online guide to navigating higher education in New Orleans for adults and other nontraditional students.
In Louisiana, only 44 percent of adults have completed a skills-based certificate or degree. At the same time, 56 percent of jobs require education beyond high school. College-completion rates vary widely across the city, and we would focus our forums on neighborhoods where college-going rates have historically been low.
