FJP Community Network Grant Winner: KCUR

28 de enero de 2020

The Funded Project:

Give people living outside the Kansas City metro area a voice through a listening project where reporters embed in small-town communities and hold public events, off-the-record listening sessions and discussions.

Grant Amount:

$7,400

In Their Own Words:

Tucked in the corners of greater Kansas City are dozens of small towns and neighborhoods with names like Belton, Orrick or Quindaro. For some, they once were economically booming communities with active business districts and at least one sustainable industry. Now, they are adjusting to changing times, changing demographics and changing cultures. As population centers become increasingly settled in the urban and suburban core, these towns don’t necessarily face extinction, but they do face being dismissed, especially by journalists. In reality, the opinions, lives and needs of these communities matter to the entire Kansas City region. Their stories are compelling, distinct and often ignored.
KCUR would like to expand an existing project, "Here to Listen," in which reporters devote weeks getting to know an under-covered community, returning several times to continue the conversation with the people who live there through off-the-record listening sessions and later with public events that generate discussion of the challenges facing these neighborhoods.
The reach of Kansas City’s daily newspaper continues to narrow, and local television goes where video is most compelling. That means it often takes a deadly crime or a natural disaster to draw local journalists to these areas. The purpose of this project is to give people living on the outskirts a voice and to reflect the distinct parts that make up this region.
