FJP Community Network Grant Winner: The Advocate

‏٢٨ يناير ٢٠٢٠‏

The Funded Project:

Prioritize the stories, needs and interests of Black and Latinx communities in South and West Dallas through community outreach to provide solutions-oriented content for their communities.

Grant Amount:

$25,000

In Their Own Words:

Advocate Media has an almost 30-year tradition of tackling issues crucial to neighborhoods in Dallas, but our current geographic coverage areas are limited to four communities where advertisers want to spend money to reach the wealthiest residents of the city. We are repurposing our nonprofit arm, Advocate Foundation, as a civic news nonprofit that digs deep into local issues, provides solutions-oriented content specific to Dallas communities, and specifically focuses on coverage in urban news deserts, where the traditional advertising- and subscription-based funding models for journalism are leaving whole segments of the city out of the public discourse.
We will pilot this work through our partnerships with existing media and grassroots organizations to engage two communities adjacent to neighborhoods we currently cover, South Dallas and West Dallas. South Dallas is home to two legacy Black newspapers whose content is limited to mostly regional and national wire services or press releases. It also has a grassroots podcast on local politics, and a nonprofit community coalition that disseminates civic event information. West Dallas has no traditional media specifically covering its community; an informal coalition of neighborhood associations is where most residents find community engagement and information. These predominantly Black and Latinx neighborhoods, respectively, have rich histories and active community groups but lack robust community-specific coverage. We will work with our partners to better understand community members' coverage needs, and use that information to determine future stories that Advocate Foundation will pursue.
